When substantial tooth structure has been lost, a crown may provide the coverage needed to restore the tooth. At Advanced Dental Concepts, we offer same-day crown treatment using CEREC technology for appropriate cases. This digital system allows certain ceramic crowns to be designed, created, and placed in the office during one visit.
When May a Same-Day Crown Be Recommended?
A dental crown covers the prepared portion of an original tooth to restore its shape and function. Treatment may be considered when a tooth has been weakened by extensive decay, contains a large existing filling, or has sustained structural damage from trauma. Certain cracked teeth may also require a crown, depending on the location and extent of the crack.
In selected cases, a crown may also address significant changes in tooth shape or color when full coverage is otherwise appropriate. However, not every damaged or appearance-related concern requires a crown. The remaining tooth structure, existing restorations, bite, and overall condition of the tooth are considered before treatment is recommended.
An examination also helps determine whether the tooth can be restored with a crown or requires a different approach. If decay or damage involves deeper structures within the tooth, additional treatment may be necessary before the final restoration is placed.
How CEREC Same-Day Crowns Work
Traditional crown treatment may require a temporary crown while the final restoration is being made. With CEREC, certain ceramic crowns can be designed and created in the office, allowing the entire process to be completed in a single visit when appropriate.
Treatment begins with preparation of the affected tooth, including removal of damaged or decayed tooth structure as needed. A digital scan is then taken to capture the prepared tooth and surrounding area. Using this information, the crown is digitally designed and fabricated in the office.
Once the crown is ready, the dentist evaluates its fit, contact with neighboring teeth, and bite. Any necessary adjustments are made before the restoration is secured to the prepared tooth.
Whether a same-day crown is appropriate relies on the condition of the tooth and the specific restorative needs.
Caring for a Same-Day Crown
A crowned tooth still needs regular brushing and flossing. While the crown itself cannot develop decay, the natural tooth underneath can still develop a cavity, especially near the edge of the crown.
Brush regularly and clean between the crowned tooth and neighboring teeth to help control plaque around the restoration and surrounding gums. Refrain from biting objects, such as ice or pens, as this can damage natural teeth and dental crowns.
Grinding or clenching teeth may also place additional stress on crowns. Regular dental visits allow the crown, its margins, surrounding tissues, and bite to be checked over time. A crown that becomes loose, damaged, persistently uncomfortable, or feels different when biting should be evaluated.
